Fusion X: Reflecting on a New Beginning for Inclusive Innovation

Some moments spark something bigger than themselves.

On June 20th, 2025, in the welcoming space of the Heart Centre in Leeds, our second Fusion X gathering unfolded. The conversations were rich, the energy contagious, and the sense of community undeniable.

What began in Manchester as a bold experiment to reimagine innovation through the lens of art, tech, and business continued in Leeds, deeper and stronger. Fusion X Leeds wasn’t just another event. It was a continuation of a growing movement. A call to reimagine who innovation is for, and what it can become when powered by diverse voices.

Why We Needed Fusion X

At CivaLabs, we’ve always believed that innovation doesn’t belong to the few. It belongs to anyone with an idea, a vision, or a desire to solve a problem.

But for underrepresented communities, access to innovation spaces remains limited. Too often, it’s not a lack of talent, creativity, or drive — it’s a lack of access, resources, and visibility.

Fusion X was our response to that.

A space to:

  • Bring diverse minds into conversation.

  • Challenge outdated systems.

  • Spark action that creates real-world impact.

And beyond all of that, to remind people that they’re not alone in this journey.

Conversations That Sparked Action

The heart of Fusion X lay in its panels. We didn’t want surface-level inspiration- we wanted practical, real-life strategies.

From Inspiration to Income

This panel explored the realities of turning creative work into sustainable income. Panelists shared lessons on business models, funding streams, and the realities of building something meaningful (and profitable) from scratch.

Overcoming Barriers to Business Growth

This session invited vulnerability and courage. It tackled the invisible walls minority entrepreneurs face when scaling — from navigating funding gaps to breaking into established networks. But most importantly, it offered hope through practical solutions and shared experiences.

The People Who Made the Day

Fusion X wouldn’t have been what it was without the leaders who shared their stories and expertise:

  • Wale Ogunjobi, Managing Partner at CivaLabs, whose vision for inclusive ecosystems is driving this work forward.

  • Hannah Lomax, digital storyteller and community builder at Roebuck Digital.

  • KC Nwakalor, documentary photographer and Head of Art & Culture at CivaLabs, exploring themes of identity and belonging.

  • Mary Fashanu, leadership coach and DEI advocate working for equity in the business world.

  • Anne Nwakalor, Founding Editor of No! Wahala Magazine, shining a light on African Photographers.

  • Damilare Ogunleye, Innovation & Growth Specialist at Innovate UK, championing diverse startups.

  • Carolyn Tipper, executive coach helping leaders lead with clarity.

  • Oluwa Victor Ogbara, legal technologist reshaping how tech and law serve people.

Beyond the Panels: A Celebration of Culture and Community

Fusion X wasn’t just about talking. It was about celebrating the vibrant cultures and businesses that too often sit on the margins of mainstream innovation events.

We were proud to spotlight Black-owned businesses including:

And as the day wound down, DJ Kesh brought people together with music that filled the space with joy, movement, and connection.

What People Felt

The feedback reflected what we had hoped: that people left not just informed, but inspired and connected.

“This event wasn’t just a panel-  it was a movement. I left with real strategies and meaningful connections.”
Matthew Kende

“Fusion X is exactly what the UK innovation space needs- diverse voices, real talk, and tangible opportunities.”

So, What Did We Learn?

Fusion X taught us that the hunger for inclusive innovation is real.
People are ready to build businesses, creative projects, and communities that reflect who they are.

We learned that:

  • Access to funding remains a vital piece of the puzzle.

  • Community and networks are as important as capital when it comes to growth.

  • And that when you centre culture and creativity, innovation becomes more human, and more powerful.

Looking Ahead

Fusion X was never meant to be a one-off. It’s a first step. A starting point for what we hope becomes a series of spaces where underrepresented voices aren’t the exception- they’re the norm.

At CivaLabs, we’re continuing the work.
Building ecosystems where minority entrepreneurs, creatives, and innovators can create, thrive, and lead.

And we’re excited for who will join us along the way.

If this resonates with you, we would like to invite you to follow our journey. And maybe, just maybe, be part of it.
